Throughout the novel, The Awakening, the protagonist, Edna Pontellier, has a revival in which she desires for her freedom and individuality. Kate Chopin uses the sea to symbolize this in Edna within the victorian society, where its viewed as wrong for a woman to express herself outside of the traditional gender role. Unfortunately, Edna had to come to a realization for the limitations in her life. The sea abled Edna for the discovery of her desires and freedom within her female role as a mother and wife. She was able to emerge through a state of spiritual awareness within the sea in which the body of water represented freedom, self discovery, and escape. Prior to the story, through the literatures perspective, a body of water was commonly used in order to express hardships and life. Edna struggled to fit into the patriarchal society in which she rebelled to the social norms. Danger and beauty was the first outlook of the ocean. Early in the storys development, it was stated that The voice of the sea speaks to her soul, which stimulated her senses. Edna Pontellier was able to become more self aware of herself as well as more aware of her desires. Her dreadful fear of the ocean later became a more senseful outlook for her. Edna constructed a new divergent perspective of the sea and the compelling force in her life. As Ednas relationship with the ocean becomes more intimate, Edna later becomes more hungry for discovering her inner feelings within the sea. The sea was a big benefactor to Ednas transformation from a girl who obeyed all social norms, to a rebelling girl who followed what she thought was right which ultimately broke all the gender norms. Â  The sea was also used to show the fine line between the sea and Ednas independence. While it was physically difficult for Edna to go out into the ocean, her mental state held her back even more. When she was finally able to swim out and come to a realization of how deep she went, she was able to take full control of her body. Her sudden terror of how far out she was, showed that without the seas help, she may have not been able to venture out and go out as far. From the text, A feeling of exultation overtook her, as if some power of significant import had been given her to control the working of her body and her soul. She grew daring and reckless, overestimating her strength, her body was able to experience the full capability of moving freely (Chopin 36). It was very clear that when she was able to learn how to swim and venture out, she also took her first step out to independence. The sea also represented solitude and escape in the end for Edna. When she was no longer able to survive through her duty of mother and wife in the victorian society, death was brought upon as the only aspect of her life that she was able to take complete control over. The ocean in the end was her final escape from society. She was able to escape her reality within the ocean in where she looked beyond pain and suffering. In the beginning of the story, the readers were told that Edna was struggling to reconcile her relationship with Robert, herself, and Mr.Pontellier. Ednas infatuation implicated much pain onto her. She ended with, She did not look back now, but went on and on, thinking of the bluegrass meadow that she had traversed when a little child, believing that it had no beginning and no end (Chopin 351). Her suicide through the sea was more than just to show her breaking point, but it was indeed her stepping stone to which she held onto her values till the day she died. To conclude, Edna emerged through a state of spiritual awareness through the sea. Kate Chopin used the sea in order to convey the deeper meaning on the effect of Edna in the victorian society. While Edna struggled to fit into the patriarchal society, through the rebellion of social norms, as mother and wife, the sea helped uncover the power of upbringing. It allowed her to uncover her independence and self desires through self discovery as well as her escape through suicide. By breaking traditional roles, Edna was able to take control of her future. She is an inspiration and by breaking social and gender norms, it had an effect on the whole story line. Edna was never able to find the happy side of being mother and wife and staying in the social norms but through the sea, she was able to pursue her infatuation with Robert and staying true to herself.

This term originates from a text called â€Å"The Prince† which was written in the early sixteenth century by a figure of the Italian renaissance named Niccoli Machiavelli. He wrote in one of his books that â€Å"the end justifies the means† which was misunderstood by audiences who interpreted it as â€Å"any evil action can be justified if it is done for a good purpose†. Niccoli Machiavelli insinuated that all the rulers that had remained in power had not been kind and caring men, concerned with justice and fairness, but were infact cruel individuals, willing to do anything to ensure the security of their state and their own personal power. Iago shows the audience his Machiavellian ways in Act two Scene one when he says â€Å"Make the Moor thank me, love me and reward me. For making him egregiously an ass. † This truly reveals his duplicitous nature and shows how much he enjoys other people’s misery. Many critics have suggested that Iago may have been a warning to King James about his untrustworthy followers, as there was a lot of uncertainty about how he was ruling England at the time. Iago also reveals a duplicitous nature in Act one, scene two, when he swears to the Greek god â€Å"Janus†; the name of a Roman mythical God with two faces which could be reflected as a two faced image. Malicious is one of many adjectives used to describe Iago, but is it entirely accurate? Throughout most of the play, he is portrayed as an open and trustworthy person by every character; all of them refer to him as â€Å"honest Iago† Yet, as the audience are well informed by the end of the first act, he appears to be quite the opposite, as he states â€Å"I am not what I am† although ironically, he always tells the audience the truth In act one scene three, Shakespeare cleverly brings in the use of rhetoric as Iago tries to persuade Roderigo that Desdemona will soon tire of Othello. He states that â€Å"she must change for youth; which she is sated with his body she will find the error of her choice†, and then goes on to reveal his hatred for Othello and how he wishes for Roderigo to help him seek revenge. In a speech made by Iago, he mentions Roderigo’s money eight times! He uses repetition to encourage Roderigo to make money, but the implication to the audience is that the money is for Iago and not Roderigo. Roderigo then says, â€Å"I’ll sell all my land† which tells the audience that Iago’s plan has worked. This prepares us for later on in the play when Iago uses his powerful manipulation to bring Othello to his downfall. Although Iago is often called the villain of the play, he also brings many entertaining moments; he is the only source of humour in the play. This may be perhaps, because he has caused all the misery in the play so is enjoying watching people suffer! He expresses his misogynistic views in Act Two Scene One in a heated discussion with Desdemona. Iago begins the discussion through the means of criticizing his wife, Emilia. He says â€Å"Sir, would she give you so much of her lips as of her tongue she oft bestows on me You would have enough† meaning Emilia often nags him. This shows that Shakespeare wished to amuse the audience too, as they would find this very entertaining possibly because they could relate to what Iago was saying, as it could be interpreted as a commonly stereotypical comment. Another scene where Iago is entertaining to the audience is in Act Two scene Three, where he pretends to be drunk in order to encourage Casio to drink more and become disorderly; in this scene Shakespeare is really playing to his audience. When the men are drinking, Iago makes a number of comments about the English, and what heavy drinkers they are compared to other countries, â€Å"Your Dane, Your German, and your swag-bellied Hollander – drink, ho! – are nothing to your English. † These comments would have met with a very wild reception from the crowd. This indicates to us that this play, despite its exotic settings, is very relevant to an English Jacobean audience. Also in this scene, Iago is at his best and plays a number of different parts to ensure the success of his plan. The three roles that he plays are: The ancient concerned for the sake of his master, the soldier desperate to maintain the peace of the city and the faithful friend of Cassio. The audience by now would be fully aware that he is really none of these roles, which brings us back to the idea that he is a complete machiavellian. Throughout the play, Iago uses his powerful language techniques to amuse and persuade the characters in order to get what he wants. During this process, Iago makes a number of powerful soliloquies that reveal his motives and plans. These soliloquies let the audience see the true personality and characteristic traits of the person speaking. Throughout, Iago is referred to as â€Å"honest Iago† or â€Å"good friend† but the audience are fully aware that these terms do not reflect Iago’s true personality because they know what he is like as he has revealed his true self in his soliloquies. This brings a lot of dramatic irony to the play; the audience are fully aware of what has happened or what is about to happen, whilst the other characters remain unaware. A great example of this in the play, is in act 5 Scene 2. By this point, Othello had already killed Desdemona and had found out about Iago’s lies; Othello then asks Iago, â€Å"why hath thus ensnared my soul and body? † ( meaning why have you done this to me? ) Iago replies, â€Å"demand me nothing; what you know, you know. From this time forth I never will speak word† This is hugely ironic because up to this, he had used words to his power, as the tool that caused Othello’s downfall. This would be very frustrating for audiences who have been puzzled throughout the play as to what motivates Iago to cause such trouble. In conclusion, I believe Iago’s character structures this play and creates the story line; some of the most exciting plots are centred around him – he murders his wife, arouses Brabantio, kills Roderigo and gets Othello’s army drunk; His actions definitely drive the plot forward. His soliliques not only ensure he has a very intimate relationship with the audience, but they are the only dramatic device of the play. Although there is evidence to prove Iago is not racist, he is just jealous of Othello as he talks about Othello giving Cassio the promotion instead of him. To us, he is the character who keeps the plot alive and full of action. His character was used recently by a critic, Germaine Greer when she compared Shakespearian with current times to emphasise her point. She stated, â€Å"we no longer feel, as Shakespeare’s contemporaries did, the ubiquity of satin, but Iago is still serviceable to us, as an objective correlative of the mindless inventiveness of racist aggression. Answer: Substance over form is an accounting principle; it is used to ensure the financial statements give a relevant, accurate picture of the events and the transactions. Through this principle, the entity ensues that the financial statement shows the reality (financially) of the organisation rather than its legal form. The accounting standard Financial Reporting Standard (FRS) -5 requires the entities to consider the substance of the transactions in financial statement over its legal form. This FRS states that whenever a transaction takes place all its immediate effects i.e. in assets, liabilities, gains and losses should be reflected rather than the legal form of the transactions. The principle of Substance over legal form ensures reliability and faithful representation of the information contained in the financial statements. The stakeholders and the shareholders of the entities rely on these financial statements for their decision making. This principle places responsibility on the preparers of the financial statement to consider the economic / financial reality of the transactions and event at times of reflecting the same in the financial statement. This principle gives more clarity to the prepares as well to the users about a transaction. The legal form sometimes misrepresents the basic characteristics that are mainly relevant for the users. However, if the accountant is able to determine the substance of the transaction then he should overall its legal form. For example: In case of finance lease where the asset for the major portion of its economic life is used by the lessee, considering the economic realty in this transaction, the leased asset is accounted by the lessee irrespective of the fact that the legal ownership of the leased asset is still not transferred by the owner of the asset. The substance form of the transaction is different from its legal form. This is very much evident from the above example. The substance of a transaction is determined by considering its effect on assets and liabilities in the statement of financial position whereas the legal form may or may not have its effects on the assets and liabilities in the statement. The problem comes into picture when the risk and reward attached to a transaction is shared by two different parties. For example, an entity may decide to sell an asset to a third party but decides to retain the right to use the sold asset and the risks attached to it. Therefore, investors need a uniform set of standards and this is further supported by the open acceptance by international organizations such as the G-20. The original goal of the IASC was to have onset of standards so that every investor in the world would understand the principles that go into the creation of corporate financial reports and corporate financial statements. Those in support of the IFRS argue that global accounting standards will improve the functioning of global capital markets by providing better information to investors and other users of financial statements. They will achiever this by decreasing the cost of preparing and interpreting financial statements and reduce the cost of capital. Some of the additional benefits are specific to certain groups. The capital markets will benefit from enhanced world wide comparability for investors and more efficient capital allocation. In addition, foreign investors will perceive enhanced credibility of local market entities while US securities will be suitable for foreign listings. Finally, the IFRS will eliminate the need to develop and maintain national standards. On the other hand, the benefits to companies include easier consolidation and cross-border acquisitions and increases the overall understanding of the financial statements of overseas suppliers, customers, vendors, and subsidiaries. However, though the benefits seems very clear to the global financial community, there seems to be an apparent hesitation on the part of the US to adopt or immediately identify specific intent to implement IFRS. Since 2000, with the creation of the IASB and its takeover from its predecessor, the acceptance of these standards saw a substantial increase in its use, especially by European countries. Switzerland was one of the first major countries to apply the standards. All of the major fina ncial markets in the world recognized the standards after Australia and the European Union recognized the standards. The United States has yet to adopt the standards as the SEC still subscribes to the US GAAP regulations and standards. These standards are primarily for listed companies but each jurisdiction may adjust the standards to their particular needs. The point of having one set of financial reporting standards is for investors to invest time into understanding only one set of principles that is useful for all investors. However, it doesnt limit the corporation from using other reporting tools or options. As it stands, the SEC is interested in IFRS but the question must be asked: What are the incentives? Why would the SEC be interested in converting from GAAP? Mary L. Schapiro, SEC Chairman since 2009, has stated that she is committed to convergence and has a roadmap to implementation in place. The SEC currently has a 5 year plan that doesnt specify a date for adoption. There is an opposition that exists within the US and there is evidence that supports there position. The details of the standards are flexible in that they may be changed in regards to the details of interpretations, recognition, and alternatives in reporting. (www. sec. org) The US is hesitant to rapidly implement this reporting standard for two main reasons. One is the US Taxation system and the other is the need to have trained professionals prepared to handle this workload. To expand on this, these are the requirements necessary for the potential use of IFRS in the U. S. The requirements are improvements in the accounting standards, the accountability and funding of the IASC Foundation, the improvement in the ability to use interactive data for IFRS reporting and the immediate need for education and training. However, the SECs roadmap is actually a 5 year convergence plan. There are three areas of concern that are key to the SEC Chairman. They include the pace of the timeline, the independence of the IASB and the cost of the IFRS adoption. These concerns are all valid, but it is more likely that this delay is truly due to the change in the political party that is currently in office. (www. sec. org) The global perspective is different as GAAP exists for each country independently in that each has they each originally had their own respective set of standards. Approximately 110 of the 195 countries on the planet have accepted IFRS. The this unbalanced acceptance has the SEC under significant pressure to address the idea of quickly implementing a unified set of globally accepted standards in addition to the development of competitive exchange markets. Nonetheless, the idea of adopting IFRS originally came up in 2007 when the SEC decided to excluded a long-standing requirement by incorporating the use of IFRS to substitute certain GAAP requirements for corporations that were established in other countries. There is also the likelihood that the SEC may be attempting to increase its position in the global market by accruing power as the global regulator of corporate standards by delaying the implementation and leaning towards the idea of convergence.
